An Anchor for Our Soul

By Daniel Garner

"So God has given both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary" - Hebrews 6: 19

"The first footfalls on Mars will mark a historic milestone, an enterprise that requires human tenacity matched with technology to anchor ourselves on another world" - Buzz Aldrin

Let's be honest, every morning at least in a minimal way as we wake up we're forced to face a painful dose of reality. Our minds automatically start to process the last conscious thought from the night before and rationalize a good outcome.

But the fact of the matter is, is that there's not always an ideal outcome. We don't always win the day, defeat the Emperor and get to swing a (real) lightsabre. It's in those times that, faced with a painful report, we have to extract what can be constructive about it. And that is this: Look towards the Anchors of faith and values in your life, and ignore the encroaching darkness.

The writer of Hebrews chapter 6, verses 18-19 in the New Testament, tells us: "So God has given both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary".

The curtain that it's talking about is the one that separated the Sanctum Sanctorum, or Holy of Holies, from the rest of the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. It was the curtain that was torn after Christ's sacrifice on the cross at Calvary, and shows us His dedication to provide for us and is also symbolic of the closeness that we can have to the Father through Christ.

You can't change the bad that will unfortunately inevitably happen, but you can change how you handle that pain. How you grow; learn. And it's through that, that your Anchors become your guiding light against the darkness so that no matter how far you sink you will always know who you are and that you're not alone.

The Takeaway: God saw that we could not save our souls by ourselves, so He sent Himself and forever cemented our ability to call upon His Name to be our ever-present strength, hope and Anchor.
