Hosea -- Chapter 2:1-13 -- Don't Cheat on God (or your husband)

By Kara Parker

Quick Recap of Chapter 1:  Hosea married the adulterous Gomer.  Gomer had 3 kids-Jezreel (boy), Lo-Ruhamah (girl), LoAmmi.  Hosea (the book) is written as a parallel story, comparing Hosea's relationship to his adulterous wife (God told him to seek this adulterous wife) and God's relationship with Israel.

Chapter 2

Verses 1-13

Verse 1: Tell your brothers and sisters, what I am about to say! ("I" is the Lord speaking)

Verse 2: Back to the parallel story.  It's not clear if we are Hosea talking to Gomer or God speaking to Israel.  Either way, Tell "your mother" she is not my wife, I am not her husband.  Tell her to take off her makeup and suggestive clothing (I read 4 different versions of the Bible for that translation.....)

Verse 3: If she doesn't, I will strip her naked and leave her to die of thirst in the desert.

Verse 4: I won't love her kids, because they are not mine.

Verse 5: For their mother has been unfaithful (or a harlot) and has conceived them in disgrace. So SHE said, I will just go find other lovers and sell myself for food, drink, clothing of wool and linen and for olive oil.

Verse 6: Him-- for I will fence her in with thorn bushes.  i will block the road and make her get lost....

Verse 7: She will not be able to catch up-- or find her lovers. So she will think that she might as well return to her husband, because she was better off with him than she is now (unable to find her lovers)

Verse 8: She doesn't realize I was everything she had. (the grain, wine and olive oil)  Even the stuff she used to worship Baal were gifts from him.

Verse 9: Now he is taken away everything he has given her.

Verse 10:  He will strip her naked in public, while her lovers look on.  Noone will be able to rescue her.

Verse 11: no more appointed festivals

Verse 12: He will destroy everything he or her lovers gave her.

Verse 13:  He will punish her her for all the times she deserted him and either went to worship Baal or went to be with her lovers.

All of this "Says the Lord".... So the "I's" and the "He" is the Lord speaking.

Rough stuff.  She will be punished for adultery, and for worshiping Baal.

Take away= Do NOT cheat on your husband, or God.  God doesn't like that!!!!
